understanding stock image rights

17 06 2010

If you’re a picture buyer or publisher of images in any way, have a website or a blog, or are a photographer, take a quick at look at http://www.stockphotorights.com/ for a quick and easy explanation of the different types of image rights, copyright, and your legal position as well as a great guide how to managethe legal minefield. It’s a joint project being run by PACA (Picture Archive Council of America) and BAPLA (British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies)as well as some involvement from one or two of the largest photo libraries.

that explains more clearly than I ever could, how stock image rights work.

14 bike co in the studio

2 02 2010

14 bike Co. hired out my studio for a couple of days this week  – photography was skillfully executed by photoben (ben I want 20% for this plug). It’s been interesting to not only see how other photographers use my equipment but also to assist ben and keith, the AD. Right now I have 500 sqft of space, backdrops, three bowens flash heads and softboxes, reflectors, stands, speedlights, a heavy duty tripod, a client meeting area, a tethered shooting / post processing workstation with 27″ dual-hdmi screen, and (most importantly of all), a good coffee machine…

the Wave

4 12 2009

Saturday 5 December sees many LCC local groups organising guided rides to join the Wave demonstration in central London supporting climate change action at the UN summit in Copenhagen.

We will be there supporting and shooting what promises to be one of the largest climate change demonstrations ever. Part of a global series of public actions, The Wave will call on world leaders to take urgent action to secure a fair international deal to stop global warming exceeding the danger threshold of 2 degrees C.

copyright amendment plans – petition

26 11 2009

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/copyrightreform/

We call on the Government to abandon plans, announced on 29 October 2009, to allow free and unhindered reproduction of photographs without payment or credit on non-commercial websites.

This is completely at odds with the Government’s stance on file sharing of other forms of intellectual property (films and music) and raises the prospect of crippling thousands of small businesses while protecting large corporate interests.

The proposal uses phrases like “It must be seen to benefit all parties, not some at the expense of others” and yet the Government’s proposal does exactly that. It takes the work of photographers who have invested time and money in creating work, and gives it to people who have no relationship with that work, for free.

Photographic businesses are already under severe strain and the proliferation of digital cameras gives the impression that creating professional quality imagery is easy. This will further devalue the work of professional photographers and destroy the photographic industry.

studio wurk

13 11 2009

the nights are closing in but that doesn’t mean I can’t still shoot bikes. when everyone else is lamenting the crap light and the visibility, or the weather, I’ve got a few winter projects lined up. Some are  outdoor but this latest one, to shoot a couple of bikes in the studio was for Amy and her awesome new cyclodelic bike.
